Who We Are
WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT
Built for the Businesses That Built Themselves.
Dark Horse Works was built around a simple idea: small and midsized businesses shouldn't have to choose between figuring everything out themselves and paying for consulting support designed for companies ten times their size.
The businesses we work with know their industries, their customers, their people, and what it takes to get the work done. What they don't always have is the specialized expertise that comes with running the business behind the work.
Dark Horse Works provides consulting across Marketing, Human Resources, and Business Operations because those are three areas that can have a significant impact on how a business performs. They may be different disciplines, but they don't exist in separate worlds. How you market the company affects who finds you and who wants to work for you. The people you hire affect what you can deliver. The way you operate affects your customers, your costs, and your reputation.
With more than 25 years of experience working across these functions, including extensive experience in mechanical, trade, and service businesses, Dark Horse Works brings an understanding of those connections that comes from having actually been responsible for them.
That's who we are.
WhY WE EXIST
Why We Started Dark Horse Works.
Working with small and midsized mechanical, trade, and service businesses revealed something we kept seeing: the people running these businesses were often asked to manage areas outside their primary expertise because the size and budget of the company didn't make dedicated specialists practical. Marketing, HR, and operations might all be important, but there aren't always enough hours, people, or resources to give each one the attention it deserves.
Then the world around these businesses started changing. Customers began finding companies differently. A new generation moved into purchasing and hiring roles. Recruiting changed. Marketing changed. AI exploded. Regulations and business requirements kept evolving. The old ways of doing things weren't always enough anymore.
Looking outside for help wasn't always the answer either. Too often, the available expertise didn't understand the industry, didn't fit the realities of a smaller business, or recommended more than the business actually needed.
The more we saw this, the more it became clear that these businesses deserved better. They had built something real. They knew their industries. They knew their customers. They worked hard to take care of their people and deliver good work. What they needed was access to experienced expertise that understood their world and made sense for the size and realities of their business.
That's why Dark Horse Works was created.
Dark Horse Works... built from experience, not theory.
WHAT WE STAND FOR
We Believe You Should Know What You're Paying For.
There is a difference between hiring someone who provides a service and hiring someone who takes the time to understand the business behind the service.
We don't believe a consultant should be able to walk into any industry, pull out the same playbook, and call it a solution. Good recommendations require context. They require understanding the business, the industry, the people involved, and the reason something needs to be addressed in the first place.
We also don't believe in recommending work simply because it can be sold. If something isn't necessary, we'll tell you. If there is a simpler way to accomplish what you need, we'll tell you that too. Your time and money should go toward solving real problems, not creating work for the sake of having something to deliver.
We believe expertise has to stay current. The business world doesn't stand still, and neither should the people advising you. Marketing has changed with AEO, GEO, AI-generated search, schema markup, and the way customers now find and evaluate businesses. Employment laws and expectations change. Technology changes. Industry requirements change. Staying current is part of doing the job well.
And we believe you should understand the work. You should know what we're recommending, why it matters, how we're approaching it, and what we're trying to accomplish. You shouldn't need a consulting background to understand the recommendations being made about your business.
We're not interested in making things sound more complicated than they are. We're interested in doing good work, explaining it clearly, and making sure the work has a reason behind it.
That's the standard we hold ourselves to.
WHAT GUIDES US
The way we work is as important as the work itself.
Every business we work with is different, but the way we approach the work stays the same. These are the principles that guide how we listen, what we recommend, and how we show up for the businesses that trust us with their marketing, HR, or operations.
They aren't abstract ideas we came up with to sound good on a website. They're the things that have mattered most across years of doing this work inside businesses like yours, and they shape every conversation, every recommendation, and every project we take on.
Here's what that looks like in the way we work.
Know the Business.
We take the time to understand the business, the industry, and the reality behind the problem before deciding what should be done.
Be Honest About What Is Needed.
We won't recommend work simply because we can sell it. If you don't need something, we'll tell you. If there's a better or simpler approach, we'll tell you that too.
Stay Current.
Expertise isn't something you earn once and stop maintaining. We keep learning, watching what changes, and bringing current knowledge to the work.
Explain the Why.
You should understand what we're recommending, why it matters, and how it fits into the bigger picture. We don't believe in making clients depend on us simply because they don't understand the work.
Make It Useful.
Good consulting should result in something you can actually use. We care about what happens after the recommendation, not just how good the presentation looks.
Do the Right Thing.
Sometimes the right answer is not the easiest one, the most profitable one for us, or even something we can do for you. Our responsibility is to give you the answer we believe is right for your business.

WhO IS BEHIND THE WORK
The Experience Behind Dark Horse Works.
Hinda Miller, Founder of Dark Horse Works, has spent her career building and managing the functions that many small and midsized businesses struggle to develop internally. Her experience spans mechanical services, financial services, and nonprofit healthcare, with much of her career focused on the mechanical, trade, and service businesses that remain central to Dark Horse Works today.
For over 18 years, Hinda worked with a mechanical services company that grew from $8 million to $25 million in revenue. During that time, she built HR, marketing, and operational functions from the ground up, including policies and procedures, recruiting, marketing programs, trade shows, contracts, fleet and safety programs, and the systems needed to support a growing, multi-state business.
That hands-on experience continued across her career. In marketing, she has led brand development, social media, website projects, trade show programs, and digital advertising for multiple mechanical, trade, and service companies across the country. One geofencing pilot she developed for a small operator on a limited investment generated more than a 13,500% ROI.
In Human Resources, Hinda has been an active SHRM member for 25 years and has built HR departments, developed personnel manuals and policy frameworks, transformed recruiting strategies, and managed the full range of HR needs that come with growing businesses.
Her operations experience includes full P&L responsibility, vendor and client contract negotiations, fleet management, safety programs, multi-state regulatory compliance, and acquisition integration planning.
What ties that experience together is not a particular job title or industry. It is the ability to walk into a business, understand how the pieces fit together, and build what is needed.
That is the experience Hinda brings to Dark Horse Works today: 25+ years of hands-on marketing, HR, and operations experience, built around the practical realities of small and midsized mechanical, trade, and service businesses.
Dark Horse Works... led by someone who has been exactly where you are.
WHO WE'VE HELPED
What Our Clients Say.
The best way to understand what it is like to work with Dark Horse Works is to hear it from the people who have.
Our clients come from different industries and come to us with different needs, but their experiences share a common thread: they value having someone who understands their business, does what they say they will do, and genuinely cares about the outcome.
That's the standard we hold ourselves to.

Why did Hinda start Dark Horse Works?

She started Dark Horse Works to give small and midsized businesses access to experienced expertise built around their actual size and budget.
What makes Dark Horse Works different from other consultants?

Does Dark Horse Works only work with mechanical and trade businesses?
No. Dark Horse Works works primarily with small and midsized mechanical, trade, and service businesses, but we also work with other small and midsized service businesses that depend on skilled people, customer relationships, and reputation.
How does Dark Horse Works decide what a business actually needs?
